one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer…

well, okay, they’re not exactly my tribute to george thoroughgood, but they are fabulously delicious.

i recently learned how to oxidized and hand-burnish sterling silver to give that shiny metal a little dark edge.  the oxidizing deepens the color, ranging from a reddish coppery hue to a dark blue-black. for these beauties, i took the wire out of the sulphur solution about halfway through, so they are a dark grey color.  then i hand-burnished them with a brass brush to even out the tone and give them some shine.

when paired with smoky quartz, citrine, and hessonite (an orange garnet), they look infinitely better than bright white sterling slver.  they’re available at my etsy store for $32 USD and are part of my delicas collection.

perfect for adding an edgy classiness to just about any outfit, day or night, they would make a great valentine’s gift (wink, wink; nudge, nudge!).  they can still get to you in time as long as you order by the 10th of february.  i’ll continue to donate $5 for every purchase made at my etsy store until v-day to benefit the victim’s of the earthquakes in haiti.  sure to warm everyone’s heart.

sneak peak!

i call him the grim keeper!  he’s the latest in my series of upcycled jewelry storage and display.  i can’t believe it, but i found this stainless tray at the thrift store.  i have no idea what it was, a spoon rest maybe?  now, with a little decoupage magic, it’s been transformed into a super cool tray to store your jewelry, wallet, cell phone…maybe even your skeleton keys.  ba-dum-bum tsccch!

he’ll be available soon at my etsy store once i get him ready for his close up.

amethyst revisited

i’m not a huge fan of purple.  i think it stems from the time when i was a kid and i got stuck with the cabbage patch kid with the purple dress (a friend got the pink one.  blerg!  i think our parents took turns trying to get them at toys-r-us).  but if you darken purple up like a sky at sunset, it’s one of my favorites!  and it’s february’s birthstone.

for these earrings, i’ve used two different metals to bring out the darker, edgy side of purple.  in the ones on the left, i’ve paired amethyst and iolite with gunmetal.  they’re available at my etsy store for $20 USD.  the ones on the right have carved amethyst beads and iolite combined with antiqued sterling silver wire that i burnished to bring out a bit of shine.  they are available at my etsy store for$26 USD.

i will donate $5 for each item purchased through my etsy store to the aid organization of your choice for haiti. participate in ‘hearts for haiti’, too–add my store to your favorites list and i’ll donate $1 to red cross.

as promised…upcycled jewelry storage

new to dogwood & poppy: storage with a side of snark.  for those of us have been accused of having too much crap and/or leaving it all over the place.

i created this one-of-a-kind upcycled tray from a thrift store find (the silver plate tray) with some paper, stickers, and ink.  i decoupaged the paper onto the tray, added the stickers and then stamped it so that it reads: “yes, but it’s MY crap”.  then i sealed it, so you can wipe it down with a damp cloth when needed.

i think it’s perfect for storing jewelry or whatever else you need: keys, cell phone, ipod, loose change, whatnot. put it in your bathroom and keep make-up or soap in it. give it as a gift to your messy valentine. or for someone who has it all…and now needs a place to put it. i can think of some men who would benefit from a place to put their crap…

the tray measures 9.5wide x 5.75high and is about half an inch deep. that’s a lot of room for crap!  it’s available at my etsy store for $22 USD plus shipping & handling.

sorry, the tray does not come with my crap; you have to supply your own. the necklace doesn’t come with the tray either, but you can buy it through my etsy store if you want.

the rain made me do it!

the sun is finally out, so i could take some photos of all the work i got done during el nino’s visit to the west coast.  these were created out of a desire to beat the dreariness, i think!

just for fun: these darling vintage lucite coral beads paired with 3 faceted opaque turquoise blue czech glass beads. blue beads are wired wrapped with sterling silver; earwires are sterling silver as well.

earrings measure 2 inches in length, including earwires.

they’re available at my etsy store for $20 USD.  i’m still donating $5 for each item purchased through my store to an aid organization of your choice to help the victims of the haiti earthquakes (i donate to the red cross if no organization is specified).  and if you add my store to your favorites on etsy (you’ll need a free account), i’ll donate $1, even if you don’t make a purchase.  free for you, help for haiti!

smolder and sparkle

paired with a white t-shirt or rocking the sparkle at night with that little black dress, this duo is ready for anything.

the bracelet has glass beads, swarovski crystals, and freshwater pearls in earthy browns and smoky grays clustered together around a gun metal chain. each cluster is wire-wrapped with sterling silver wire. bracelet measures 7.5 inches long and finishes with a gun metal lobster clasp.  it’s available at my etsy store for $52 USD plus shipping and handling.

the earrings are made from cut swarovski crystals, facted glass, and thai silver spacers.  ear wires are sterling silver and earrings are 1.5 inches in total.  they’re available at my etsy store for $36 USD plus shipping and handling.
