what i learned

holy cow, i had so much fun taking that class last weekend. i learned so much, but i’m really glad that i had already been playing around with soldering because there is so much to learn that i’m sure a weekend wouldn’t have been enough. it was nice to already have some of the basics down {anneal, quench, pickle, work, repeat} so that i could practice honing my skills. having one on one instruction from a great teacher is invaluable.

working with a proper torch and bench set up {as well as amazing tools that i can’t yet afford} i was able to do some pretty fun stuff. it’s inspired me to build my tool collection. my friend gave me a new torch head that i’m itching to try out {just need to pick up the right gas} and this week i took the financial plunge and bought a jewelers flex shaft, complete with foot pedal for maximum fun. vroom, vroom! {this will allow me to drill, sand, and polish pieces.}

probably the most valuable thing that i learned is that i can do this, given enough patience, some sleep, and a few sips of caffeine. i’m hoping to be able to bring rings like these, which both started from a flat piece of sterling silver sheet metal, to my etsy shop soon.

just as soon as those tools arrive…

new photo backgrounds

curly soft maple reminds me of sand dunes

after taking you behind the scenes, i thought i should share another new photography development: yesterday i went to the fancy lumber store in town and picked up some remnants {yes! lumber stores have them, too!} for a steal. i picked out woods that were visually interesting to me in three fairly neutral tones: a light {curly soft maple}, a medium {lacewood}, and a dark {wenge}.

lacewood makes me think of feathers

as beautiful as they were unfinished, i went to work sanding them and putting a single coat of danish oil on them. i wanted to get rid of any future splinters and give the wood a slight luster and boost with the oil. i only coated one side, so now i have not three but six different backgrounds depending on what looks best.

wenge is a dark beauty

i may have freaked out when the oil darkened this wenge soooo much, but in the end i was very happy with how it turned out. look for them soon!

i like the subtle {but natural} interest the wood adds!

bringing back the jewelry boards!

it’s been a loooong time since i’ve offered these guys up for sale. remember them? so cute and a great way to see what you’ve got {ensuring that you’ll wear that necklace that’s currently wadded up in a drawer somewhere}.

upcycled jewelry boards of yore

i have one that i keep all my goodies on and it’s super handy! i haven’t had them in the store for a while because i haven’t been able to find any good children’s clothes to upcycle. but then i realized the other day that i have a ton of great fabric in my stash and i can make some more that way. {i’m not always the quickest}

here are some sneak peaks of what i’m working on.

frames to work with {and duck prints to throw out}

pretty fabrics

and then i dig into my stash of brads, ribbon, vintage buttons and trim, and see what comes up.

this one looks preppy and sweet

this one has kind of a thrifted look to it

this one has a handmade, natural vibe

this one is shaping up to be prim and proper

and this one is becoming quite mod!

it’s likely that not all the doodads will make the final cut, but i like to lay everything out first and work from there. i think of them as assemblages, and they can take quite a while to complete. click here to see my tutorial for how to make your own {or just see what’s behind the scenes}. it was featured on cosa verde’s blog ages ago. hopefully i can get these up and in the shop soon!

getting excited!

who doesn't need a turntable pillow? from theleef.

it’s a little too late to worry, as tomorrow is the sew funky marketplace! not that lack of time ever stopped me. do i have too much stuff? have i made enough? will my display get put up in time? will anyone buy anything? what if i don’t have enough bags? what if, what if, what if?!

i wanted to share with you some of my personal faves of people coming to the market. i can’t wait to get my hands on these goodies! there are so many cool vendors coming. if you’re in the area, i hope you’ll stop by! as far as i know, this is the first crafts market of its kind here in riverside, and i’m super excited to be participating in the very first one. i hope there will be many, many more! i love meeting other crafters and seeing their beautiful creations.

just click on the link to get more info on these cuties. better yet, stop by the market and pick on up! we’ll be there from 9:30 am to 3 pm at the Riverside Marriott!

i solemnly swear i am up to no good bracelet by foxwise

busy bee

howdy stranger! apologies for being awol, blogwise. i’ve been keeping busy, busy, busy: mostly getting ready for the Sew Funky Marketplace and sometimes painting the garage.

i’ve been crazy busy setting up my display for my booth, and this past week i focused a lot on branding and packaging. after much hemming and hawing, i have decided to use birds as part of my image. {does it count that this decision stems from the business cards i got way before portlandia came about? did you know that my only tattoo is a birdie? and she’s two years old! so i’ve been putting a bird on it for a while now. what i’m trying to say is that i’m not jumping on the bandwagon, baby, i’ve been on the bandwagon. and we’re still accepting new members.}

so this week i printed out labels and stuck them onto my bags…{looking for good, cheap, round labels? check out world label}…

…and i made the sign for my booth using freezer paper to screen print onto fabric {the birds i free-handed}…

…and i made more trays for displaying little objects…

…and i cut up lots of fluff {thick batting} for my handmade boxes…

…and i got my printer tray ready to display earrings.

there’s been lots more, but i thought that instead of overwhelm you all at once, i’d drag it out a few days. tomorrow i’ll show you some of the new goodies that i’m excited to bring the shop. then i’ll show you what we’ve been up to with the garage. {hint: it looks so good i do a little happy dance every time i see it!}.

keepin’ busy

here are a few updates from the world of getting ready for the sew funky marketplace. i finally found another folding table {a 6 footer that also folds in half, meaning it fits in our car}. i ordered 600 big round labels {to go with the 250 kraft shopping bags i’ve ordered!}. i ordered some divine twine {yay!} from whisker graphics. i’ve been dyeing the $3 a yard fabric so that it will be a nice grey for the backdrop of my booth. i’m working on constructing that backdrop out of pvc pipe. and i finally did a mock up of my booth, sans backdrop.

what did i learn? an 8 foot by 4 foot booth is a lot smaller in reality than it is in my head. viola may not be able to come, because i have a really cool wooden crate that looks good and holds product. sorry vi. but it was good to see it all laid out and in place. i was worried i had too many trays, but it looks like i’ll have just the right amount, once i put them together.

sweet paper birdies // via charcoal & crayons

i like how my little paper birdies turned out! i got the idea from charcoal & crayons, where there is a nice tutorial on how to put them together. i’ll scatter them throughout the display, to tie in with the birdies on my business cards. when i get my stickers printed up, they’ll have little birdies on them, too!

i like how the doilies look on top of the grey velvet. it remains to be seen whether there will be enough time {and energy!} to make the full table runner as planned.

transforming gold into silver with spray paint

pvc pipe is good for so many things!

i've wanted some of this stuff forever!

the pile of stuff is growing!

look at all those boxes! i’ll make tons more in time for the fair. i’ll have my tags, too.

phew! i’m exhausted. but happy.

what the fuss?!

here’s all the info for the sew funky marketplace! hope to see you there! {if you’re nowhere near southern california, i’m willing to accept a rain check until i’m closer to you.} someday soon i promise to bombard you with father’s day ideas, recipes, and cards instead of all this craft fair stuff. pinky swear.
