i’ll be at the riverside marriott from 9:30 to 3:00, selling my goodies, as will a host of other wonderful crafters. look for your favorites as well as some newbies!

{p.s., tomorrow’s a big day downtown: there’s the farmer’s market as well as two awesome activities at noon: the easter egg-stravaganza and the peep show, involving real live peeps. wish i could be there for that one! so come and stay a while. breakfast at simple simon’s too?}

just kidding, it’s not that bad, but i am on my second cold in a row, and i got food poisoning this weekend. nice, huh? it’s like the universe doesn’t know that i’ve got the sew funky market coming up this weekend?! {eek! panic!} i mean, really.

also, our house is a wreck, what with all the dog hair, craft crap, and surprise stuff everywhere. {i really will tell you soon, i swear! just as soon as i have some time to take pictures of it all.} need a hint? can’t wait? psst: it’s a new store. details coming soon. promise.

apple picking

yesterday we headed to the sierras with some friends for a little apple picking in oak glen. it might have been raining/sleeting/snowing/slushing, but that didn’t stop us from having a good time! {though it did stop us from doing the u-pick thing. we settled for going home with two pre-picked bags of apples: pink ladies and arkansas golds.}

our first stop was snow-line orchard, where we promptly noshed on their fresh-from-the-fryer donuts and hot apple cider. {which was a good thing, ’cause it was 32 degrees outside!} the little ones {and me} enjoyed watching the donuts come out of the fryer, and there was some discussion as to how over-the-top it would be to install one in our house. {too much?}

there was everything apple-y you could imagine: 16 varieties of apples, 3 flavors of apple cider, apple butter, apple syrup, apple jam, apple pies & tarts…in addition to our apples, i picked up a bunch of apple twigs, which will become something crafty, and one of their original labels, printed in 1950.

there were changing leaves as we drove along, a corn maze, pony rides…all things we would have loved to explore had it not been so incredibly wet. but we managed to stay warm and somewhat dry, ducking into a bakery to peek at their mile high apple pies, and ending the trip at a little mexican restaurant for delicious tamales and time together.

ps: thanks to stacy reynolds for the tip on heading to oak glen!

sew funky: recap

here she is, in all her glory

i think my feet have finally stopped hurting, my back is getting less achy, and i caught up on some sleep this weekend. but boy, was the sew funky market fun! it was hard to set up a booth all by my lonesome {with the hubby out of town, i had to haul everything in–and out–myself} but i had a great time anyway.

the place was packed with vendors and crammed with shoppers, but everyone handled the crowd well. there was so much good stuff, like this adorable owl pillow from meagan of fairly fabulous; clutches and bags by paper from heaven; and the sweet embroider hoops above by lauren of lauren elise handcrafted. {lauren’s booth was like a breath of fresh air and i wanted everything in it! don’t you just love her displays?}

i enjoyed hanging out with my neighbor vendors darlene of etheloos and shannon of lee.f. {you may remember we picked up a mustache pillow from lee.f last time; this time i came home with a wooden kid’s toy for those kids i don’t yet have.}

busy bee

howdy stranger! apologies for being awol, blogwise. i’ve been keeping busy, busy, busy: mostly getting ready for the Sew Funky Marketplace and sometimes painting the garage.

i’ve been crazy busy setting up my display for my booth, and this past week i focused a lot on branding and packaging. after much hemming and hawing, i have decided to use birds as part of my image. {does it count that this decision stems from the business cards i got way before portlandia came about? did you know that my only tattoo is a birdie? and she’s two years old! so i’ve been putting a bird on it for a while now. what i’m trying to say is that i’m not jumping on the bandwagon, baby, i’ve been on the bandwagon. and we’re still accepting new members.}

so this week i printed out labels and stuck them onto my bags…{looking for good, cheap, round labels? check out world label}…

…and i made the sign for my booth using freezer paper to screen print onto fabric {the birds i free-handed}…

…and i made more trays for displaying little objects…

…and i cut up lots of fluff {thick batting} for my handmade boxes…

…and i got my printer tray ready to display earrings.

there’s been lots more, but i thought that instead of overwhelm you all at once, i’d drag it out a few days. tomorrow i’ll show you some of the new goodies that i’m excited to bring the shop. then i’ll show you what we’ve been up to with the garage. {hint: it looks so good i do a little happy dance every time i see it!}.

the booth, the booth!

i've chosen the booth colors in natural fabrics like cotton and velveteen

as you undoubtedly know {just kidding for those of you who aren’t as enamored with my life as i am} i’m heading to my first ever craft show {the sew funky marketplace on july 9th here in lovely southern california}. i’d like to take a moment and brag a bit: i was invited to apply. okay, bragging over, now comes the hard work. i have to set up a free-standing booth complete with backdrop for hanging signs and merchandise. i’m searching for used tables, thinking about how i’ll display everything, and what kind of packaging i’ll need. so much to think about!

i’m still in search of quite a few things–and will no doubt be down to the wire on a lot of things–but i *have* picked my color scheme. so that the jewelry will stand out, i’m choosing muted tones: cream, mushroom, and grey. i’m going for natural fabrics with lots of texture. i’ll punch it up with a few brightly colored accents, like these lime green artificial hops. i think i’ll take viola, too.
